On June 4th, 2009, we played with peonies courtesy of Olivier Guigni of L'Olivier Floral Atelier. The colors were nothing less than astonishing as each student picked among the fuschia, pale pink and cream flowers and created a pave (or a brick shaped arrangement) in a glass container lined with leaves. Olivier always brings drama to his classes as well as a touch of whimsey -- that touch can be seen in the grasses that were added to some of the arrangements.

A New Palette by Remco Van Vliet
Remco Van Vliet's class on May 21st, 2009.
Look at all these wonderful colors!
Remco Van Vliet brought us a little breath of spring on a grey day in New York with his flowers. He crowded the school with viburnam branches that we cut down and placed into low containers making a centerpiece that would grace a table fit for a glorious dinner party. So many flowers! For a real treat, go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and see what he has designed for the Great Hall this week.
Meredith Waga's Master Class
Meredith Waga gave us a wonderful class on May 14th. She usually brings the most beautiful flowers, but this time she had the class choose their own combinations of flowers -- each student came out with a bouquet that was different and individual. Here are three designs.
We are lucky to have Meredith teach another class this July on July 16th. Not only is she a talented designer, but she is an inspiration to all of us who are thinking about opening our own businesses!

It is hard to believe spring is here after such a long winter. FlowerSchool has a wonderful lineup of classes brought to you by our Master Florists. Remco Van Vliet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be giving his annual spring branches class on Thursday, April 30th. If you have never taken a master class with Remco you are in for a delight and no more so than when he demonstrates his way of putting branches for a tall arrangement. He is featured in April 2009 Martha Stewart Living Magazine as well as the spring issue of Elegant Bride. Take a look and you can get an idea of how he manages to put together flowers and branches with such inspiration.
Speaking of Master Classes, I would like to clarify that the term Master Class refers to the teacher of the class, not the students. Anyone from a beginner to an experienced florist is welcome to join us in a master class. The class is about the style and the vision of the individual Master Florist. Everyone takes away something regardless of his or her level and the flowers are always astonishing. It is a hands-on experience, however most of the flowers are conditioned before the students come to the class. In the series classes, the students prepare and condition the flowers so you could say that the Master Classes are more pampering. In the Master Classes, we take time to serve tea and pastries as well as taking time to speak informally with the teachers about flowers, weddings and events. The flowers in the Master Classes are pre-conditioned and ready to be designed as a bouquet. The Series classes are more nitty gritty,
for the student who also wants to learn how flowers are prepared and conditioned for longer life.
Many times these days, I have been asked questions from people who are thinking about making a change in their lives and becoming more involved in flowers either as event planners, florists, or other options. Generally I advise them to take a mixture of classes – the Introductory series, a few Master classes and then the more advanced series. These can be purchased as group of 12 classes and taken over a year or in a shorter span of time. In April we will be doing back-to-back series starting on April 20th so that a student can take 2 series classes and two Master Classes within a period of two weeks. It is a good combination for those students who would like to do as much as they can within a short period.
We are also planning to do these classes in July over a one-week period and will put that up on our schedule as soon as we have everything worked out.
Please call us at FlowerSchool 212-661-8074 and we can give you some more details.
